Advocacy That Works! (RECORDED CONTENT), Online, Friday, 01. January 2021

Faith-based communities and grassroots organizations can and should express their values in the public square. We have a responsibility to speak truth to power in strategic ways. Whether you’re dealing with local community needs, statewide or national issues, an effective advocacy strategy depends on credibility and consistency.

Recorded content from four online sessions with national advocacy expert Breon Wells, including lectures and Q&A from the live sessions.  Set aside an hour at a time on your own schedule to make yourself a more effective faith-based advocate.

Upon registration, you will receive a link to a Google Drive with MP4 files of each recorded class session and a PDF of the slides from the class. Individual registration for the entire series is $25. If you plan to watch together with a group of 4 or more, we have set up a group rate of $100, and ask you to please register as a group.

Session 1 | Effective Days of Action / Foundations of Demonstration

From the Women’s March to Black Lives Matter, there has been a groundswell of marches, protests and demonstrations across the globe. What is not seen is the weeks and months of preparation necessary to maximize these powerful moments. Marching is not the only tool in your arsenal. What other power levers do you possess? This session will teach participants how to wisely use all of the advocacy tools at their disposal to execute their agenda.

Session 2 | Developing an Agenda

Faith based leaders should engage government and when necessary, speak truth to power. From local community needs to statewide issues, faith-based communities and grassroots organizations can often supply practical and broad solutions for positive change. This session will equip you to locate the social justice issue that resonates with you and develop an advocacy agenda.

Session 3 | Leveraging your Capacity

Churches, faith based organizations, and activists are often strapped when it comes to resources and capacity. This session will help you locate and develop your capacity, build partnerships, and engage coalitions.

Session 4 | Speaking Truth to Power…The Right Way

Public policy shapes experiences and opportunities for everyday citizens. This reality necessitates that advocates, activities, and faith leaders learn when and how to engage governmental entities. This session will consider when government interactions are warranted, and how to effectively communicate with these entities for positive change.
