Artistic Literacy Institute, Zellerbach Auditorium, Wednesday, 12. June 2019

Join us at the inaugural ARTISTIC LITERACY INSTITUTE at UC Berkeley June 13-15 (registration and welcome on June 12th).
If you believe that the arts matter;  that everyone deserves meaningful access to the arts; or that the arts belong to all of us  -- then you belong at this summer's Artistic Literacy Institute.
ARTISTIC LITERACY is a human right and a teachable skill. It is the ability to make meaning of works of art and, through this process, to forge connections to our humanity and the humanity of others. When we practice artistic literacy—by exploring an artist’s process, understanding artistic concepts, and learning skills within an artistic discipline—we inspire contemplation on the human experience, challenge our beliefs and perceptions, and cultivate our ability to revise what we think we know. We gain entrance to works of art that may have seemed inaccessible; we experience a sense of ownership and belonging.
Artistic literacy as a framework and a methodology builds upon decades of best practices in arts education as exemplified by Lincoln Center Education, the Kennedy Center, and other leaders in arts-based learning and teaching. If you have any training in these methodologies, the ARTISTIC LITERACY FRAMEWORK invites you to leverage your expertise in new ways.
If you are new to arts-based teaching and learning, you'll leave with a new vocabulary and set of tools to engage students of any age to connect with works of art.
Artistic Literacy as both philosophy and a methodology is:

Intimate (personal)

Join us to share with and learn from your peers, and to spend three days focused on what you love and something you believe in: that great works of art connect us to our own humanity and the humanity of others.
