Carve By Number - Digital Detox Workshop, You Are Beautiful, Saturday, 04. May 2019

As the “Take Care” show draws to a close at YAB HQ, we’ve teamed up with the great folks at Dremel (makers of tools and accessories) to create a relaxing, tactile, and interactive Digital Detox workshop.
We’ll be encouraging everyone to turn off their phones, silence their social media urges, and focus on the calming peace of creating a unique piece of art. In order to help guide you, each attendee will receive a lightly etched piece of painted wood to begin. In place of a marker, you’ll get to use one of Dremel’s lightweight, hand-held rotary tools to carve patterns and textures into your piece -- creating something all your own.
No skill level required! Like a paint by number, you can carve in any way that works for you. YAB team members and Dremel specialists will be on-hand to assist with any questions and provide how-to on the tools themselves, but you are in charge of the direction of your piece.
It’s a mesmerizing process, and you’ll likely get lost in the enjoyment of creating. Plus, in the end you’ll walk away with your own customized piece of art that is truly unique.
All workshop attendees get a private tour of YAB HQ and enjoy 15% off all merchandise in the store during the workshop.

About Dremel
At Dremel, we believe that when we all create, make and build, our world is a richer, more personal place to live. Therefore, it is our goal to empower you to accomplish your vision of bringing your ideas to life. To enable you to do this, we provide you with all the tools you need to tackle specialized tasks and challenges within your projects, from full product systems to project ideas, and from beginner’s guides to pro tips and tricks.

About YAB HQ
YAB HQ a 5,000 square foot building at Elston & Roscoe. The front of the building features a street-level retail space, home to our merchandise and gallery work, open to the public every day. The back half of the building is where we make our large installations and small editions. This space has been a long time coming, and a mammoth undertaking. To put it in perspective, we have previously been working out of Matthew's house in his two-car garage for the last few years. With the generous support of Baum Revision, we were able to make this next big step.

Gallery Openings
Every other month or so, we’ll completely redo the gallery portion of our retail store with brand new work, all related around a new positive message. This is our sandbox; a place to play around with new ideas and concepts. We hope you enjoy the work, and would love to hear what you think.

Workshops
We offer a variety of Hands-On Workshops from making your own t-shirt and painting your own wood pieces to making your own LED letter, laser cutting, and learning CNC basics. Come and get your hands dirty as you learn more about the process of how we create works in our studio. Be sure to check out our Events Calendar () to learn more.

A little bit about Avondale
We love the Avondale neighborhood, and we're drawn to the mix of old industrial and new ideas popping up. We met with Alderman Deb Mell, and offered to donate a You Are Beautiful installation to a local school in the area. Grover Cleveland Elementary reached out, and we installed a piece both in English and Spanish (You Are Beautiful / Eres Hermoso/a). We were thrilled to be able to make an impact in the community so quickly.

A little bit about Matthew Hoffman & You Are Beautiful
Matthew Hoffman is a Chicago based artist and designer whose public works have been exhibited internationally. His ideas and work have been included in Good, the New York Times Magazine, and Ready Made. He has been published in books by Gestalten, Droog, and Taschen, and was featured in a segment on the Oprah network.
Matthew has created large scale public installations for the City of Chicago, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway Conservancy, Albright Knox Gallery, as well as companies like Apple, Facebook, Zappos, and Cards Against Humanity. There are close to 30 outdoor installations currently up in the Chicagoland area.
Matthew is the Custodian of You Are Beautiful, a project to better the world in little ways. The message has reached every corner of the globe, with over 5 million stickers shared by the community. The hope is for us to share uplifting thoughts with each other.
