Data visualization—the study of the visual representation of data—plays a crucial role in the work of researchers and analysts. Organizations tasked with producing, releasing, and analyzing large amounts of data can more effectively evaluate and communicate their work by understanding how to better visualize their data. Often, however, visualizing research results is an afterthought, and that ultimately limits the effective relay of information. This Data Visualization in Excel workshop provides an introduction to creating better and more effective data visualizations in the Microsoft Excel software package. Attendees will learn ways to use Excel more efficiently with a small set of formulas and data-importing techniques. Attendees will also learn how to extend the data visualization capabilities of the software tool and create a wide range of exciting, distinctive graph types. What You Will Learn Attendees will learn a variety of formulas and graph types, including INDEX, MATCH, REPT, VLOOKUP, SUMIF, and COUNTIF heatmap slope chart sparklines broken stacked bar chart waterfall chart lollipop, and dot plot. Who Is Teaching This workshop is taught by Jonathan Schwabish, senior fellow at the Urban Institute and founder of PolicyViz. Dr. Schwabish is an economist, writer, teacher, and creator of policy-relevant data visualizations. He is considered a leading voice for clarity and accessibility in how researchers communicate their findings. His book Better Presentations: A Guide for Scholars, Researchers, and Wonks helps people improve the way they prepare, design, and deliver data-rich content. He is on Twitter @jschwabish. What You Need Attendees should have some basic working knowledge of Excel. The software package should already be installed on your computer before the event. The instructor will email Excel and other relevant files before the class. The class will be taught in the Excel 2016 version of the tool. What You Get Attendees will receive a copy of the instructor’s ebook, Step-by-Step Guide to Advanced Data Visualization(available for both 2010 and 2016 versions), which walks the reader through the tutorials covered in the workshop.
