Friends of Dr. Frank Staggers, Sr., Lake Merritt, Saturday, 13. June 2020

Frank Staggers, Sr., MD (1926-2013) was the first African American surgeon to operate and care for patients at the Naval Hospital in Oakland, California. As an expert in urology, he believed that "No man should die from prostate cancer." Through his local, statewide and national leadership, Dr. Staggers, Sr. worked tirelessely to eliminate health disparities for racial/ethnic minorities, and for poor and underserved residents, especially those in Alameda County. Dr. Staggers, Sr. also advised that,"We are better when we are together."  As a US Naval Captain, he advocated for bringing an ARMADA rather than a single ship to win the battle at hand. The 1st Annual Friends of Dr. Frank Staggers, Sr. Prostate Cancer Walk around Lake Merritt on June 13, 2020 will enshrine Dr. Staggers' legacy by bringing together a community engaged, multi-stakeholder ARMADA in the fight against prostate cancer disparities for African American men in Alameda County.
The GOALS of the 1st Annual Friends of Dr. Frank (FoF) Staggers, Sr. Prostate Cancer Walk are 1). To increase prostate cancer awareness and knowledge in the Alameda County community at large. 2). To engage Alameda County's major health care systems in adopting a focus on, and activities to reduce disparities in prostate cancer mortality for African American men. 3). To raise funds that sustain the walk and support the development of the FoF Community Advocacy Training and Support Program.
