Getting started in SketchUp; 1-1 distance learning, Online, Tuesday, 31. March 2020
About this Event
We have cancelled or postponed all of our classroom based training days. As an alternative I am offering SketchUp training over the internet on a 1-1 basis.
There are three types of training on offer:
3hr training: specifically for those who want to get up and running with SketchUp (see below)
2hr training: you need training and advice of specific topics, but 1hr is not enough
1hr training: ideal if you are familiar with SketchUp but need specific help to solve a problem or progress
SketchUp: Getting started
This day will get those who are new to SketchUp up and running with a clear understanding of how to organise models and the principle tools and techniques used to create 3D geometry.
Setting up your SketchUp interface: toolbars, units and modelling styles
Navigating: how to use the mouse: zoom, orbit
Controlling what you see: standard views, perspective and camera settings
Making basic shapes: cubes, cylinders
The fundemental SketchUp workflow: tags & groups
Draw things: pencil & arc tools
Creating accurate shapes: dimensions, sizing, construction lines
How to control and reposition objects: move and rotate
Manage your geometry: making groups, components and layers
Make it look interesting: adding basic colour, texture and shadows to your creations
Make use of your masterpiece: exporting images
Using library parts
You will be able to make a basic garden/ structure / building by the end of this training session
How does training over the internet work?
I use Zoom software. You may have heard a lot about it recently. It was developed several years ago as a platform for holding classrooms and meetings over the internet. It can accomadate everything from a 1-1 teaching session to a +100 attendees. You do not need to download any software; simply follow the link that you recieve in advance of the training. I will explain the controls and how you can see my screen and share your own, in the first few minutes.
Can the trainer see my house/ office?
It can be helpful to see each others faces during training. You may want to consider what is behind you and prepare for the training by repositioning your seat/ which way the camera points. If you do not want to be visible to the tutor then you can deactivate your computer's camera to maintain privacy.
What do I need?
- your usual laptop/Mac/ PC
- SketchUp Pro installed. If you are downloading SketchUp specifically for this training then do so about 24hrs in advance, ensure that it is loaded and that you can open it. If you are considering buying SketchUp following the use of trial software, let me know as I can supply a 10% discount code. SketchUp comes with an inital 30day trial and it is useful to use this time to practice with after training before you have to commit
- 3 Button mouse (NOT the “magic” mouse by Apple)
- Your power lead and extension cable
If you are using a laptop, it can be difficult to fit both the window you are watching and the one you are practicing on on the same screen. If available it can be useful to use a second device such as a pad to free up screen space.
Do I need to download and software?
No. I will "host" the event so there is nothing to do except follow the link that will be sent to you.
Do I need to take notes?
No. An advantage of online training is that the sessions will be recorded. This means that you can review and replay any part of the training. The recording can take a few days to be processesed and a link will be sent for you to access and download the file.
How can I contact the organiser with any questions?
What's the refund policy?
Tickets will only be refunded if attendance is cancelled more than 15days from the event. There will be a £15 adminisation fee for all cancellations.
Tickets cannot be transferred to other events. Full refunds will be given should the event have to be cancelled for any reason.
Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?
No, tickets will not be sent out prior to this event.
Is my registration fee or ticket transferrable?
Yes, your ticket can be transferred to a colleague/ friend. You must advise us of who is replacing you.
What if I can’t make any of the dates listed?
Please contact me if you have a specific need or would like training on days/ times different to those specified. I can be flexible and evenings and weekends are possible.
