Harvest to Hand, Bamboo Basics From The Grove To The Studio, Beaverton, Saturday, 23. March 2019


Bamboo, long used in other cultures, has remained a mystery as an art material in the United States until recently. Information about bamboo as a living plant and an art material will be conveyed in this introductory workshop. The class will start at a local bamboo grove where students will learn about different varieties of bamboo and how their physically characteristics can be used to create art. An introduction into how bamboo grows and is controlled will also be introduced. Information about gathering and pruning bamboo will be conveyed as we gather our materials to create with! Day two and three will be spent in the artists studio, using the bamboo we have gathered. During day two Students will learn about bamboo preparation, cutting, drilling, and decorative cane work while creating a wall vessel. Day three bamboo splitting and the process for making bamboo strips will be introduced. Students will weave a small basket which can be used for flower arranging.
