Health at Every Size: Is it actually healthy? Examining the science behind Intuitive Eating & Health at Every Size®
Health At Every Size® has become a buzz phrase within the eating disorder community. Critics argue this approach is contributing to numerous health problems and perpetuating the “Obesity Epidemic” in our society. This often leads to confusion and mixed messages from providers. This presentation will introduce Health At Every Size® and Intuitive Eating and review the science behind these approaches and how they can be utilized in supporting people with disordered eating and chronic dieting.
 Objectives:   
 1. Participants will be able to describe the principles of HAES® and intuitive eating and how they can be used to help treat people with disordered eating.
 2. Participants will learn what the science about HAES® and intuitive eating.
 3. Participants will be able to critically assess the usefulness of HAES® and Intuitive Eating approaches with their clients.

Melissa Preston, LPC, RD co-owns Omni Counseling and Nutrition in Denver, Colorado. She received her Bachelor’s in Nutrition from Colorado State University, and her Master’s in Counseling from the University of Colorado, Denver. Melissa provides a fusion of counseling and nutrition in her practice as she works primarily with people with eating disorders, body image struggles, weight oppression, and associated trauma. In addition to her practice, she strives to be an advocate for people with eating disorders and body image struggles and uses various social media channels to reach a wider audience. Inspired by her own recovery from her eating disorder her greatest passion is helping people become free of the chain of food and weight issues to live their most meaningful life possible. Corrie Van Horne, LPCC, RD is the co-founder, along with Melissa Preston, of Omni Counseling and Nutrition where they provide a space that offers inclusive and relationally driven mental health and nutrition counseling that aims to cultivate healing of the whole person. Corrie received her bachelor’s in nutrition from Kansas State University (2008), and her master’s in counseling from the University of Colorado, Denver (2017). Corrie provides a fusion of counseling and nutrition in her practice as she works primarily with people with disordered eating, chronic dieting, weight and size oppression, and associated traumas. Her approach is weight inclusive and holds a social justice lens. She works with clients to examine the role stigma and oppression have had in their relationship with food and their body.  In addition to Omni, Corrie strives to be an advocate for social justice, working to dismantle the oppressive systems rampant in our culture. She is a guest speaker at local universities, high schools, and conferences. Corrie also writes for the Omni Counseling and Nutrition blog about topics related to disordered eating, body image, dismantling fat phobia, sexuality, and the intersections of social justice therein.
