Title: How to help your clients achieve long-term goals: Motivational Interviewing and Brief Action Planning
Course Desciption:
Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a proven approach to increasing a client's likelihood of making a behavior change and resolving ambivalence. Brief Action Planning (BAP) is an effective tool for helping clients take charge of this individual change process.  BAP is a highly structured, client-centered, self-management support technique.  It is grounded in the principles of MI and draws heavily from the psychology of behavior change. The overall goal of BAP is to assist an individual to create an action plan for a self-management behavior that they feel confident in achieving while the practitioner monitors progress using the spirit of MI. While it is helpful to have a knowledge base in MI, this course is also well-suited for those new to the MI approach as we will begin the course with a brief review of the MI concepts and core strategies.  You will then learn how to set an agenda with a client, how to bring up difficult topics and concerns using the MI spirit, and how to implement the BAP process. Through lecture, video content, role plays, and discussion, you will learn how to help your clients achieve long-term goals as well as aid in your own goal-setting process.
Learning Objectives:
  1. Explain the spirit and core skills of Motivational Interviewing.
  2. Identify strategies to bring up sensitive topics and communicate concerns.
  3. Explain how to use a behavioral menu.
  4. Describe how to formulate an action plan using the BAP model.
  5. Describe how to develop a SMART goal and problem-solve when a client's confidence level is not optimal.
