Make Furniture! 3D Design for Laser Cutting[4/22, 4/29, 5/6, 5/13, 5/20, 5/27] Wednesdays 7:00pm - 9:30pm
This 6 class workshop will guide students through designing, laser cutting, and assembling a beautiful and functional display shelf to take home*. We will cover step by step basics of the parametric design workflow in Autodesk Fusion 360, and learn how to convert our 3D model into 2D files to be used with Technocopia’s laser cutter. Each class will provide an immersive hands on experience as we move between the design software, laser cutter, and assembly process. Each student will take home a version of the shelf unit pictured above.
Classes 1 - 2: Mini ShelfLearn the basics of the Fusion 360 to laser cutter workflow in order to create a 3-piece shelf that will fit on your hand.
Classes 3 - 4: Tabletop Bookcase Dig deeper into Fusion 360's tools in order to increase your model's size, add more parts, improve it's structural stability, and customize it to your liking.
Classes 5 - 6: Assembly and Decoration Laser cut and assemble your bookcase, and learn how to use the laser to engrave designs to beautify your new piece of furniture!
*Each student will be responsible for bringing in their own 24"x48" sheet of plywood for their final product. How to choose plywwod for laser cutting will be discussed in the first class.

A Beginner to 3D Design?
Students who have not done any 3D design before are encouraged to familiarize themselves with the Fusion 360 workspace prior to the first class. Download the software at or visit Technocopia during our Thursday night Open Hacks and check out Fusion 360 on our in-house computers.
The following tutorial videos will help you gain a basic understanding of Fusion 360's user interface and modeling environment. We will be covering much of this content in the workshop!
