Map Basics: Scale & Resolution, Monday, 06. February 2017, Miami

Geographic scale, cartographic scale, spatial resolution. These concepts and geospatial data considerations are critical to mapping and analysis, but many map consumers have little understanding of how they impact the maps they read. Even some map producers fail to properly evaluate these considerations when designing their map output or geospatial analyses.

Matt Toro (of Miami Geographic) will provide an overview of these concepts by exploring various types of maps and geospatial data of different scales and spatial resolutions.

We'll be using the free open source GIS software QGIS (Quantum GIS ) [pre-download for Mac or PC here: http://www.qgis.org/en/site/forusers/download.html]

Examples of the types of geo-data we'll be looking at (in a metro Miami / South Florida context) include:

- historic USGS topo maps
- Natural Earth vector geometry data
- open street map (OSM) vector tiles
- Landsat and ASTER satellite imagery
- aerial photos

All of the geo-data listed above are free and publicly accessible.

All Maptime Miami events are free and open to the public. Please RSVP via our Meetup page:
