Planetary robotics, Baker Botts LLP, Thursday, 23. January 2020

We will discuss robotics, rovers for planetary and asteroid missions. Among speakers:
Terry Fong (intelligent robotics group director, NASA Ames Research Center);*Liam Pedersen (head of autonomous mobility, Nissan; former NASA Ames robotics researcher);Michael Sims (founder & CEO, Ceres Robotics);Kris Zacny (VP & exploration technology group director, Honeybee Robotics).(*) -- awaiting confirmation.
Schedule (Thursday, January 23):6:00-6:30 pm -- networking;6:30-8:15 pm -- panel discussion;8:15-9:00 pm -- and beverages : Baker Botts LLP, Building One, Suite 200, 1001 Page Mill Road, Palo Alto, CA.
About speakers:Terry Fong is NASA's Senior Scientist for Autonomous Systems and the Chief Roboticist at the NASA Ames Research Center. Terry is also the Deputy manager for NASA's "VIPER" rover, which will prospect for water ice on the Moon in early 2023. Terry previously led development of the Astrobee free-flying robot, which was recently deployed to the International Space Station and will serve as NASA's micro-gravity robotics testbed for the next decade. Terry has published more than 150 papers in space and field robotics, human-robot interaction, virtual reality user interfaces, and planetary mapping. Terry received his B.S. and M.S. in Aeronautics and Astronautics from MIT and his Ph.D. in Robotics from Carnegie Mellon University.
Liam Pedersen is Deputy Director for Robotics at the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance Silicon Valley Lab, where he works on autonomous driving and urban mobility. Prior to this he worked on robotic systems for planetary exploration at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California, looking particularly at rovers for the exploration of Mars and permanently shadowed Lunar craters. He holds a Ph.D. in robotics from Carnegie Mellon University (for the first robotic discovery of a meteorite), and is the recipient of NASA's Public Service Medal and the NSF Antarctic Service Sims is founder and CEO of Ceres Robotics, that was on-boarded in the NASA CLPS program with SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Sierra Nevada to be future suppliers of lunar landers. Prior to Ceres Robotics, Sims was Senior Scientist at Mars Institute, Vice President at Moon Express and a 20+ year veteran of NASA. During that time, he worked on artificial intelligence and robotics principally focused on planetary rovers, including Mars Pathfinder, and Mars Spirit and Opportunity Zacny is VP of Exploration Technology Group at Honeybee Robotics. His expertise includes space mining, In Situ Resource Utilization (ISRU), and geotechnical systems. He is currently developing hardware for the missions to the Moon (VIPER, PRIME1, CLPS), Phobos (MMX), and Titan (Dragonfly). Prior to his graduate studies he worked in the underground gold, diamond, and coal mines in South Africa. Dr. Zacny received his PhD (UC Berkeley, 2005) in Geotechnical Engineering with an emphasis on Extraterrestrial Drilling and Mining, ME (UC Berkeley, 2001) in Petroleum Engineering, and BS *** laude (U. Cape Town, 1997) in Mechanical Engineering. Zacny participated in several Antarctic, Arctic, Atacama, and Greenland expeditions and has over 300 is a Silicon Valley Space meetup event. Welcome to join the group to get updates on our future events.
