Poetry LocalMic is a series that presents the best of Sarasota’s local poets. This month we are featuring poets Lina Belar, Sharon Whitehill and Barbara Schmitz.
Lina Belar's poetry blends her fierce affection for nature and all its creatures, including the human ones, with a foolish love of language. Her first chapbook, "Rural Score", was published in 2017 by Finishing Line Press. A poet, historian and musician, she has written about giant pumpkins, century farms, teenage *******, veterans' stories and the arts, far ranging topics that collectively define rural Minnesota. She is one six poets included in Northern Lights Library Network's "Poets Across Minnesota" literacy initiative and whose broadsides of poems were presented at the McGrath Series at Minnesota State University Moorhead last Whitehill is a retired English literature professor from Grand Valley State University in Michigan—retired and writing memoir and fiction. Poetry is a more recent endeavor, but it's exciting to get her feet wet in this genre as well as the Gulf. Her first chapbook of poems, “The Umbilical Universe,” has just been published by Cosmographia Schmitz is the Poet of Highway 81 on whose banks she has lived and written to the rhythms of the traffic for over half her life. She taught writing and literature at Northeast College (Norfolk, NE.) for thirty years and founded the Visiting Writers Series there. Her poetry books have won two awards from the Nebraska Center for the Book and she received an Individual Arts Award from the Nebraska Arts Council. In another lifetime (the 70’s) she was an apprentice to Allen Ginsberg at Naropa Institute. Her latest books are What Bob Says (Some More and Always the Detail. Path of Lightning: A Seeker’s Jagged Journey recounts her spiritual journey.
