Priesthood ordination of Sean Salai SJ, New Orleans, Saturday, 10. June 2017

FULL WEEKEND SCHEDULE BELOW

At 10 am on Saturday, June 10, 2017, Archbishop Gregory Aymond of the Archdiocese of New Orleans will ordain me and three other Jesuits to the Catholic priesthood at the Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus (6367 St. Charles Ave New Orleans, LA 70118) Jesuit parish next to Loyola University New Orleans in uptown. Please join us for the ordination mass and a lunch reception at the university afterwards! Reception will be either in the Danna Student Center or in the athletic complex; just follow the crowds to find it. The newly ordained priests will be giving our first blessings and ordination cards out at this lunch reception as well.

More information on the Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus is here:

The night before ordinations, at 5:30-8 pm on Friday, June 9, Archbishop Aymond will join all of the Jesuits and personal guests of the ordinandi (families and close friends) for a formal banquet in the St. Charles Room at the Danna Student Center of Loyola University. If you're a family friend, a family member, or visiting religious/clergy like Deacon John Russell or Fr. Bret Stockdale SJ, you will have a spot for you at my tables.

After ordinations and the reception on Saturday, there will be an evening dinner party and social in New Orleans for anyone who is interested in attending, location and time TBA: Stay tuned!

First Masses of Thanksgiving for each of the newly ordained priests will follow on Sunday morning, June 11: I will be celebrating and preaching the 10:30 am family mass at Church of the Most Holy Name of Jesus (same place I'm getting ordained) as my First Mass of Thanksgiving.

In the following weeks after ordination and my first mass before reporting to my new assignment on July 1, I will celebrate masses of thanksgiving at the following places:

-St. Athanasius the Great Byzantine Catholic Church, Indianapolis IN (I will concelebrate and preach), 10 am Sunday 6/18, followed by a luncheon in the parish hall.

- Gesu Chapel, Jesuit School of Theology of Santa Clara University, Berkeley CA, 5:15 pm, Friday, June 23 (Sacred Heart of Jesus feast)

- St. Isidore the Farmer Catholic Church, Danville CA, 4 pm Saturday 6/24, followed by a reception hosted by the Knights of Columbus.

-Holy Rosary Catholic Chapel, San Quentin State Prison, CA, 11 am Sunday 6/25 (you'll have contact me in advance if you want security clearance to attend)

[In addition: -Jesuit High School of Tampa, Florida, I will deacon baccaulaureate mass on Monday 5/22 shortly before my priestly ordination; at some later date TBA next school year I hope to celebrate and preach a school mass when I'm free.]

Accommodations: All of the events are uptown at Loyola University New Orleans and Holy Name parish right next to it; both are located right on St. Charles Avenue on the street car line. One convenient place to stay is the Hampton Inn on St. Charles in the Garden District. Hotel staff will tell you how to use the street car if it's your first time; you can just hop on at the nearest stop and ride it up to Loyola University (the campus and church are across St. Charles Avenue from Audobon Park) when coming to and from the ordination events:

Travel: Fly into Louis Armstrong International Airport if you're coming by plane and take a shuttle or cab to your hotel. Please be aware that New Orleans charges Uber a tax for operating in the city, so an Uber ride from the airport to Loyola University uptown costs about $70.

There will be a pew near the front of the church reserved for my family and close friends during the ordination mass. Father Bret Stockdale SJ, my friend from philosophy studies in Chicago, will be vesting me. Any priests and deacons planning to concelebrate should let me know as soon as possible.

Please share this Facebook event with others as you like, especially the information with people who aren't on Facebook. If anyone needs more information and has any questions about ordination weekend, please email me at sean@jesuits.net or Facebook message me -- and please keep our ordination class in your prayers as I complete my 12 years of training for the priesthood that began in August 2005!
