September City & State Book Club with Troy L. Wiggins, City & State, Tuesday, 10. September 2019

We're bringing you an old twist on the old book club. We've teamed up with some crazy talented local authors to create this one -of-a-kind opportunity.

Each author has selected one of their favorite novels, which you’ll be able to purchase in store (or elsewhere), and will join us for a night of great conversation, drinks and treats to share their thoughts and hear yours. We think it’s a pretty cool way to connect with your community and enjoy the company of awesome people.

The September Book Club author is Troy Wiggins, and the book club reading is From Boss Crump to King Willie: How Race Changed Memphis Politics by Otis Stanford.

Troy L. Wiggins is a writer and editor from Memphis, Tennessee. His short fiction has appeared in the Griots: Sisters of the Spear, Long Hidden: Speculative Fiction From the Margins of History, and Memphis Noir Anthologies, and has appeared or is forthcoming in Expanded Horizons, Fireside, Uncanny and Beneath Ceaseless Skies. His essays and criticism have appeared in the Memphis Flyer, Literary Orphans Magazine, People of Colo(u)r Destroy Science Fiction, Strange Horizons, PEN America and on Tor.com. Troy is Co-Editor of Fiyah Magazine of Black Speculative Fiction, and be hlogs (rather infrequently) about writing, nerd culture, and race at afrofantasy.net. Troy lives in Memphis with his wife, Kimberly, and their two dogs. Follow him on Twitter at @TroyLWiggins.

Of From Boss Crump to King Willie, Wiggins writes "At the heart of Memphis' triumphs and struggles are the great individuals who represent its people, making politics as much of a dividing force for Memphis' development as music. Otis Stanfords' From Boss Crump to King Willie: How Race Changed Memphis Politics outlines how Memphis politics, and the people who make up this city's political systems, has shaped this city from the early 20th century to the present. In From Boss Crump to King Willie, we can discover how lessons from Memphis' past can help us to shape the city's future."

From Boss Crump to King Willie: How Race Chnaged Memphis Politics is available for purchase at City & State. Purchase of the book through City & State includes a free ticket to the book club meeting. If you prefer to purchase the book elsewhere or already have a copy, tickets can be purchased here.

Book club meetings include beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic) and light snacks for attendees.

Tickets $10 in advance | $12 at the door
