Have you recently started your own business and realized that you need help? Are you unsure if you have explored all of the tools and resources needed to ensure your success? Would you like more in-depth assistance with your business planning? Some entrepreneurs make quicker, more effective progress when they can get direct advice and ideas from business experts and other entrepreneurs. If this is more your learning style, then a great option is the Scale Up! Louisiana. This 27-hour training gives entrepreneurs the interactive advantages of a classroom environment with the opportunity to receive individual business counseling from a team of professional advisors. Additionally, guest speakers from the local business community offer personal insights and business tips designed for those in the start-up phase.
In order to participate in this series, business owners must have an EIN and be registered with the Louisiana Secretary of State. In addition, all participants must be or become certified in Louisiana Economic Development’s Small and Emerging Business Development Program.
Session Descriptions
Section 1: Becoming an Entrepreneur
During this session, participants will learn the key entrepreneurial behaviors that will drive the success of their business and the fundamentals of building a successful, sustainable business. Participants will also gain insight into how personal priorities impact business goals and how they might be affected by your strengths, weaknesses, and personal vision. Introduction to the Lean Start-up Model and the Start-Up! Louisiana Plan of Action are also covered.
Session 2: The Lean Start-up Model
During this session, participants will learn the key components of The Lean Startup Method and the business model canvas. This process teaches start-ups how to drive their venture: how to steer, when to turn, and when to persevere and grow a business with maximum acceleration. This process emphasizes efficiency - doing more in less time. Key components covered include: Customers, Offerings, Infrastructure, Revenue Streams, etc.
Session 3: Understanding Business Financials
Discover why financials are so important to your business’ success. Learn how to prepare the financials every business must have, as well as, how to analyze the numbers and utilize them to impact your bottom line. This session will cover accounting terminology, the income statement, balance sheet, and the statement of cash flows.
Session 4: Understanding the Customer Decision Journey
For entrepreneurs, the #1 goal in marketing is to reach consumers at the moments that most influence their purchasing decisions. For optimal influence, businesses can leverage the customer buying process – the journey your customer goes through before buying your product.
Today, with explosion of product choices and digital channels, coupled with the emergence of an increasingly discerning, well-informed consumer, businesses must take a more sophisticated approach to navigating this environment to capture all touch points and key buying factors. During this session, entrepreneurs will learn the key components of the customer decision journey and how they can leverage this process to increase sales.
Session 5: Marketing 101
Gain a deeper understanding of your market and learn effective marketing principles that will help you to accurately identify and reach your target customers. Discuss how to develop effective business communication methods that potential customers will respond to. During this session, participants will gain a better understanding of how to prepare a marketing plan including strategy and tactics that align with business goals.
Session 6: Increasing Sales with Exceptional Customer Service
Consumers have become increasingly dependent on social media platforms to identify new sources of products and services and to share information about their experiences with businesses that have patronized, good or bad. Now, more than ever, entrepreneurs must be very strategic and deliberate about offering quality products and services and delivering exceptional customer service at every single touchpoint, in-person and online.
During this session, entrepreneurs will learn essential strategies for improving customer service including:

 Developing a customer service strategy and plan of action
 Integrating customer service into the company culture
 How to train and engage employees in the customer service process
 Retaining clients and creating brand ambassadors

Session 7: Forecasting 101
During this session, participants will obtain an understanding of the importance of forecasting and why it is critical to the success of a business. The key steps to preparing forecasted financials as well as the assumptions and inputs are introduced in this session.
Session 8: Preparing to Access Capital
For small businesses, there are certain indicators that are very telling as to whether or not obtaining a traditional business loan will be possible. These include the personal credit score of the owner, time in business, profitability, debt service coverage, and collateral. In considering these factors and others. It is imperative that entrepreneurs understand how to best position themselves to access capital and what they can be doing today to advance their business closer to becoming bankable.
Session 9: Start Up! Louisiana Plan of Action
The series culminates with a review of each participant’s plan of action to becoming more successful in the start-up phase. In addition to a debrief of the content covered in the series, participants will be introduced to resources for continued support.
In order to attend, all participants must be a Certified Small and Emerging Business via Louisiana Economic Development’s Small and Emerging Business Development Program. Please note that most startups meet the eligibility requirements.
