Free workshops made possible with funding from Rasmuson Foundation through the Harper Arts Touring Fund, and is administered through the Alaska State Council on the Arts. The tour is also supported, in part, by a grant from the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts.
The Talkeetna workshops will be on Tuesday, July 3 at Myron F. (Ace) Ebling VFW Post #3836 on Veterans Way in Downtown Talkeetna. Because of the grant from ASCA and NEA, the workshops are FREE. You are invited to listen in, even if you don’t play the instrument being taught.
12 - 1 Student Registration
12:00 - 1:00 pm Introduction to Scottish Bagpiping
This course will discuss the anatomy, tuning and playing of the bagpipe, including the differences between types of pipes. Students will learn basic chanter fingering, if desired. The class will be appropriate for beginners and for people who have never played the bagpipe, but are interested in how they work. No experience necessary. David Brewer, Bagpipe Instructor and Multi-instrumentalist has toured with the The Old Blind Dogs and Molly's Revenge. A key musician for the sound track of the PBS documentary, "Andrew Jackson, Good, Evil, and the Presidency".
1:30 - 2:30 Guitar in the DADGAD Tuning
Intermediate level class aimed at students who already play guitar, but who are unfamiliar with the tuning, which is a tuning common in accompanying Scottish & Celtic music, and also utilized in giving a different sound to guitar accompaniment in other styles. Students will be expected to bring their guitars to practice the exercises, chord shapes, and music taught by Mr. Hendey. Instructor: Adam Hendey, Guitar Instructor, Multiinstrumentalist and composer, has performed in Ireland, UK, and the US. Currently a student in the Robert D. Clark Honors College at the University of Oregon majoring in Music and Philosophy. He holds a Masters degree in Celtic guitar performance from the Royal Conservatory of Scotland in Glasgow.

4:30 - 5:30 pm Scottish Fiddle Master Class
Advanced fiddle course appropriate to the many fiddle students in the Anchorage area. Students will bring their fiddles to play during the class which will teach Scottish tunes, styling, technique, and ornaments. Instructor: Rebecca Lomnicky, Scottish Fiddle Instructor. Winner of the Glenfiddich International Scottish Fiddle Championship in 2009 and a 2014, summa *** laude graduate, Cornell University, double major in Music and Sociocultural Anthropology. Awarded the 2013-2014 Ellen Gussman Adelson Prize for outstanding instrumental music performance.
