Emancipation: A Tool or a Trophy - by Derek Davis:
What does emancipation do? Is it useful or ornamental? Is it a ceramic elephant sitting on a mantle or is it a social-political instrument lost in a shed?
Emancipation as a legal term is a “fact or process of being set free from legal, social, or political restrictions.” For a child it is the age of adulthood. The child is no longer legally bond as a dependent of the parents. However, what does this mean for a people or ethnic group.
When the United State of America became independent it was emancipated from rulership by Britain. The nation was freed from British royalty, economy restrictions, and Parliamentary law. Sadly, that independence was not shared with the black people of this nation. The Emancipation Proclamation was the catalyst of freedom for Black Americans. The question is how well is emancipation working?
The African proverb for Independence, Fawohodie, states that “Independence comes with its responsibilities.” This workshop examines how we depict and describe independence in our community today.

What's Your Elephant art workshop - by Niki Lopez:
#whatsyourelephant is a movement that creates a safe space for people to use the arts to have dialogue and bring awareness to the unspoken. It includes visual and performing arts, interactive arts, creative community building, hands-on projects, workshops and events.
This hands-on art-making workshop will invite participants to create a piece that speaks on their experience or definition of emancipation, being free, not being free or a time where their freedom was taken away.
